Research and innovation are two of the basic tools for future development, their importance having been recognized internationally . Promoting research and development and innovation (‘R&D&I’) is an important EU objective laid down in Article 179 of the Treaty . Innovation is defined as a key factor for achieving the objectives of the European strategic policy EUROPE 2020 for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
